NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS.

BY ARCHER

It is reported that Chelono will in futuro bo trained at Avondalo by P. Scally and ho is expected to enter liis new quarters at an early date. Chelono has been very disappointing since winning the August Handicap at Riccarton in August and his eight start 3 in tho meantime have only yielded two thirds. Tho Leighton gelding possesses plenty of speed and possibly a chango of scene mny prove beneficial to his form.

The Ellcrslie-traiued hack Taneriri has been scat to Now Plymouth to compote at tho Taranaki meeting and ho i 3 to contest the Moturoa Electrio Stakes 10-day. Tanoriri displayed somo dash in running second to Jolly Money at Takapuna in November and has trained on satisfactorily in tho meantime, so that he should possess reasonably good prospects in the class he has lo meet in his engagement to-day.

The two-year-old filly Iloynl Financo displayed lino speed in running second to Pclyxena at Takapuna last month and her performance was rather impressivo for tho fact that she begun slowly. Royal Finance is in a class where she should have good prospects in tho Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap at New Plymouth to-day and is likely to command a very strong following.

It is not anticipated that Macroom will keep her engagements at New Plymouth aud it is moro than likely that sho will raco next at Rotorua, where sho has two engagements on tho opening day. Macroom was successful at her last start, and, now that she has returned to winning form, is likely to achievo further success in tho near future.

Ellerslio stables will have fair reprceentation at Rotorua and hor3Cs from headquarters booked to compete at tho meeting comprise Bizarro, The Thoru, Baby Bun, Bahama, Palmares, Tho Lover. Brampton and Lady's Boy. Several of theso horses promise to raco conspicuously at tho meeting and on tho wliolo they should fare well in their engagements.

With nil acceptance of eight useful horses in tho Rotorua Cud the Rotorua Racing Club seems likely to havo a field that will provide a very interesting contest in the leading event at its coming meeting. It is likely that most of the acceptors will run and the fact that all tho candidates have recently shown form will invest tho race vvith considerable interest. Tho issuo looka very open and the wagering on tho event should bo good. Early fancies mny include Mervette, Tho Lover and Queen Arch.

That good jumper Beau Cavalier is working along nicely at Ellerslio under tho direction of S. Tooman and is carrying u very bright appearance. All going well in

the meantime. Beau Cavalier should be in great order for the autumn and winter meetings and no doubt ho will again distinguish himself when the important jumping events of tho winter come up for decision.

The Magpie gelding Pict, who has been spelling for some months, is being pottered about at present and will probably rejoin tho regular workers at headquarters in the near fuure. Piet is burly and bright- after his holiday and should corns back all the better lor the rest. Another who was noticed exorcising the other day was Respirator, who was recently operated on for throat troubles. Apparently ho has made a good recovery and probably ho will also start work seriously soon.

RACING IN DOMINION.

BOOKMAKERS ADVOCATED.

Australian and N.Z. Press Association. SYDNEY. Feb. G

Mr. Ken Austin, a well-known auctioneer, and racing man, who returned to Sydney by the Marama from New Zealand, says lie thinks the time has arrived for tho Government of the Dominion to consider the reiniroduction of bookmakers. If bookmakers arc working in conjunction with the totalisator the way of the New Zealand homeowner would be far more easy. As tho position now stands thero it is very hard to make both end 3 meet in racing.
