MAORIS IN THE NORTH.
LAND TITLES QUESTION.
GRATITUDE TO MR. COATES.
[BY TELEGXt APH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] DARGAVILLE, Monday. On Saturday afternoon Mr. J. G. Coates and Mr. Tau Henare, M.P. for the Northern Maori District, accompanied by Mr. W. Cooper, consolidation officer, and Mr. Thompson, land purchase officer, mot a number of Maoris to discuss the problem of a consolidation of land titles in the Kaipara electorate. Mr. Coates said this matter had been considered during the regime of the late Government, and Sir Apirana Ngata was now carrying on with that policy. Its results so far were very convincing. A tribute to the administration of the Department of Native Affaiis under the late Government was paid by Mr. Cooper. Ho eulogised the work of Mr. Coates as Minister-in-charge of the department. The Maori people felt very much his relinquishment of office, notwithstanding the fact that one of their own race was now in occupancy of the position. The Maoris owed Mr. Coates a big debt. "He is the only Minister who has stopped the flow of tears from the eyes of the Maori people," said Mr. Cooper.
