FLOODED COALMINE.
POSITION AT HIKURANGI.
WATER CONTINUES TO RISE
NEW PUMPS TO BE UTILISED
Although water continued to riso slowly in the Hikurangi Coal Company's mine yesterday afternoon, the view taken last evening of the possibility of pumping the mine clear was optimistic. Yesterday afternoon there was 20ft. of water in the main shaft.
Sir Edwin Mitcholson, tho chairman of tho company, said a Gin. and a 4in. pump wero being brought into operation immediately, find it was hoped to have much more cheering news of tho situation this morning. It was thought quite possible that mining in some sections would be resumed within a fortnight or three weeks.
Although a quantity of machinery had been submerged, there wasjittle risk of it becoming a total loss. lhe electric motors would need rewinding, but beyond that and a little attention they would be serviceable when recovered. In the meantime about 200 men are idle. Tho output from the mine, which included about 1600 tons of coal weekly for the Railway Department, has ceased.
