NO EXPLOSIVE RISK.

AUCKLAND MAINS SYSTEM.

RECENT TROUBLE IN LONDON.

Assurance that Auckland ran little risk of such underground mains explosions as have recently caused tremendous damage in London was given shareholders of the Auckland Gas Company at the annual meeting yesterday by Mr. James Lowe, engineer and general manager. Answering a question on the subject Mr. Lowo said Auckland did not share London's risk. In a number of London subways thero were carried together mains of all descriptions, including electric light, gas and sewerage. Apparently the troublo there had originated from the fusing of high-tension wires, followed by tho generation of explosive gases from the heating of bitumen and other material surrounding the wires. The resultant explosions would in turn damage the gas mains, leading to further explosions.

Fortunately Auckland had no such subways, which ho deemed essentially dangerous, comparing them with mines. They had been proved by at least one trial in Glasgow, to bo very expensive, much moro so than the safer system of each service having its own channels.
