NORTH COAST TIDES.

ABNORMAL CONDITIONS.

CARS SUNK IN THE SAND.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN" CORRESPONDENT.]

DARGAVILLE, Monday

Unseasonably high tides and remarkably heavy seas were noted on the coast over the week-end. Huge waves swept up the beach and against the cliffs three or four hours before the scheduled time for high water.

A fairly strong westerly breeze was blowing. The waves were breaking a long distance from tho shore. Three motor-cars, belonging to Messrs. J. Smith, Bert Nield and T. E. Jones, which had been parked at the mouth of Maules Gorge on Saturday night, were found yesterday morning to have been washed by the waves ; during the night. They had sunk to the running boards in tho sand, and tho water had been awash in the engines, on the floors and in the back seats.

After the cars had been dug out of the sand the engines "kicked over" without trouble. It was fortunate that they were not swept away.
