HANNAN'S RETIREMENT

TITLE GIVEN TO MASON

Monday The ceremony of handing over tlio stake money in connection with the New Ze.i land champion sculling match was made memorable by the champion, J. P. liannan, announcing his retirement. " I finished niy sculling career when tho judge fired the gun this afternoon," he said at tho function on Saturday evening, "and in view of the line effort put up by James Mason this afternoon, I now formally hand him over the title." (Applause.) Hannan stated that he had competed fop the title oil seven occasions. His first attempt was against William Webb, in 1915, when ho was unsuccessful. On Webb retiring the title was thrown open, and in 1020 liannan defeated Fogwell on the Wairau River. Since then he had withstood challenges from Wells (twice). Hadfield and Mason (twice). Ho had also rowed for the Australian and New Zealand title against Arnst, Feltuii and McDevitt (twice), and competed unsuccessfully for tho world's title against Arnst and Major Coodsell. " I have decided io retire, not because of my age," said liannan, in conclusion, " but to get out. of the game with a fairly substantial record."
