NATIVE BUSH BURNED.
FIRE IN SCENIC RESERVE. [r.V TELSGItAPH. —OWN C'OJIR KSPONDENT. DA RO AVILLE, Monday. A scenic reserve of nine acres, known as Bushy Point, Tinopai, was destroyed by fire last week. It was one of the beauty spots 011 the Tinopai estate, and was in full view of steamers passing up the Wairoa liiver. Evidently a fire had been lighted among some driftwood and had crept up the bank. When the alarm was given many Tinopai residents turned out, and, proceeding some two miles along overgrown tracks, arrived just in time to save the pine belts around the orchards. The fire had got in, but. was speedily put out. Then came the arduous task of beating out the fire in the scrub, nearly a mile in length. Much of the tea-tree was 10ft. high and up to 20ft. in the gullies. With the aid of slashers a break was made and the fire kept in check. Fortunately an easterly wind was blowing. Had it been from the west of Tinopai its orchards would probably have been burned.
