CARE OF PRISONERS.
PRODUCTIVE EMPLOYMENT.
SAVING LAST YEAR £70,000
BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Monday.
An address on the New Zealand prison system was given to members of tho Hamilton Rotary Club to-day by Mr. B. L. Dallard, controller-general of prisons, who thanked the Rotary Club for the help it had given the department and the interest taken by the Hamilton members in the Waikeria Borstan Inst i-
The criminal was essentially an indiI viduahst, said Mr. Dallard, and selfishness, 111 his opinion, was one of the root causes of crime. The example (if selfsacrifice and service provided by the Rotarians who visited tho Borstal Institutions, particularly, was an " eye-opener " and a challenge to many of the inmates. The productivo employment of prisoners in New Zealand last, year resulted in a saving to the taxpayers of £70.000 in tho cost of prison maintenance. Greater attention was. now given to the after-care of prisoners by the formation of voluntary committees in the main towns to help men who had served sentences to rehabilitate themselves. Excellent work had been dono in this direction, but there was still a great field for effort, particularly with ex-Borstal lads.
