WANGANUI RIVER SERVICE.
NEW COMPANY TO RUN BOATS. CONTRACT FOR FIVE YEARS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN C'OJULESrOSPENT.] WAKGAIs'DI. Monday. Sonic anxiety was felt by up-river residents and others interested when it was announced last week that the proposal for a company to take over the running of the Wanganui River services at present carried on by A. Hatrick and Company, which were to cease at the end of the year, had come to nothing, the contract offered by the Government having been refused. Much of the land in tho upper reaches is inaccessible by road. When the Wanganui River Trust met. this afternoon, however, it was announced that arrangements had been made for a new company to take over the running of the boats from December 1. Mr. R. S. Hatrick, a member of tho firm which has run the steamers for many years, is to be tho managing director and the new organisation has completed a contract with the Government for a term of five years. It is stated that the service will be carried on as in tho past. This announcement is welcomed here, as apart from tho concern felt for tho welfare ot river settlers tho tourist traffic for which Hatrick and Company catered extensively is regarded as of the first im- 1 portance to tho city.
