END OF SALVAGE CLAIM.

PARTIES REACH AGREEMENT.

PAYMENT FOR TUG'S SERVICES

CREW TO RECEIVE BONUSES

[CV TULKGHATH.—OWN COBHESTONDEXr.] WANG AN UI. Monday.

The last phase of what lias proved otic of the most interesting salvage claims in die history of New Zealand shipping has been signalled by tho payment by the Canterbury Shipping Company to the Watigamti Harbour Board of £I2OO, "with costs amounting to some hundreds of pounds.

In April last, as the result of a mishap while entering the port, the company's steamer Gala was in danger in a heavy storm off tho coast and the Harbour Board sent out its salvage tug, which towed the Gale to Wellington. Claim was made for salvage, which was refused, and a Supremo Court case followed, tho board claiming £5900. The owners of the vessel contested the ca:;e, contending that the Gale was not in immediate danger and that tho tug's towlino was taken on board because it was thought by the captain that tho agents had asked for tho tug to be despatched.

The action was heard at Wellington by Air. Justice Sim, who, however, died the day following its completion without delivering his judgment. Rather than have tho case reheard tho parties entered into negotiation, the payment mentioned being the result.

From tiiis sum the board has decided to grant bonuses of £SO to the master of the tug, £25 to the engineer, £l2 to ike second officer and about £3 each to the crew of 10.
