RESULT OF LEGAL DECISION.
FALL IN NEWSPAPER SALES
United Service. LONDON, Nov. 22. As a result of the enforced supervision f tlie newspapers' football competitions, owing lo the, judgment of the Kind's '■"ich Division, sensational falls in circulation figures of many leading newspapers are anticipated.
The most popular form of competition was that requiring the reader to forecast correctly 24 results out of 44 printed on the coupon. In spite of tho tremendous odds the first prizo of £20,000 jointly offered by three newspapers was three times won outright. Many smaller prizes, amounting to £IO,OOO, wero distributed weekly. The principal argument that influenced the Court was that many, individuals paid a penny for the coupon and not the newspaper; therefore they wero gambling.
