THE MAIN SOUTH ROAD.
.Sir, —Last week I noticed in a report of the meeting of the Automobile Association a complaint of the bad state of the Main South Road between Ngaruawahia and Hamilton. Hoping that some abler and more influential person than myself would take the matter up, this letter was deferred. As ono who frequently uses tho road, I wish to call the earnest attention of the public, and bodies responsible for maintenance, to what is about as bad a state of tilings as can exist where road matters are concerned. Not only is tho sanding of the road a positive danger, as the report in the Ueuald rightly stated, but is a waste of money in that it is utterly useless. Only two weeks ago, a thick layer of sand was deposited on a section of tho rood, the workmen were at the job on the Monday, when I passed along. On the following Saturday there was scarcely a vestigo of the stuff left, and the surface of the road even rougher than before. Last week it was worse. And this method of treating the road lias been going on for years past; no harcl metal, or anything to stand the wear and tear of modern traffic has been put down. To persist in dealing with any road, much more a main road, in such a manner is, I repeat, wasteful and wrong. Hoping that others will agitate and help to improve matters. J. W. Robinson. Vicar of ITunlly.
