OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT

STEER-RIDING CONTESTS. To-day the pageant of aristocratic stock and the carnival of rousing outdoor entertainment will make their great appeal to the people. From noon tens of thousands will throng the Epsom grounds, and will be regaled with the most highly spectacular diversions ever staged by the association, together with all the ordinary fun of the fair provided by the great metropolitan fixture. From 10 o'clock onward there will be a diversity of equestrian competitions, including smart displays by trotters and pacers and horse-leaping and driving competitions. The high jump is scheduled for one o'clock and the grand parade for 1.30.

Further important horse-leaping events will be sandwiched during the afternoon between displays by the Mounted Rides, the finals of tho wood-chopping events, and a bareback rifling competition. But what will most thrill the expected huge attendance will be tho steer-riding competition, starting at 3.30 o'clock. Competitors will mount the steers " in the mob," and awards will be made on the basis of the ability displayed by the riders and the length of time they bestride the plunging animals.
