Thousands of people have visited the quaianthio island during the past two week-ends, mainly to see tho sledge dog Chinook, hero husky of Labrador, and one of tho 90 dogs at present on the island awaiting the arrival of the other members of Commander Byrd s South Polar expedition. Of all the dogs easily the most popular is Chinook. He is 11 years old and has won fame m the frozen North for his almost human intelligence and his fearlessness. lie has led his team into blizzards and over trackless ice in latitudes whero mercury freezes. Every time he has got thoro and returned again and his record includes the saving of human life. When mere man power has seemed to have reached its limit Chinook has emerged triumphant. The dog's keeper, Mr. A. Walden, said to-dav:—"That dog never fell down on his job. Chinook is tho best-known dog in America—in tho world."
One of Chinook's most spectacular feats was accomplished as load dog in tho sealing of Mount Washington in 1926. It was regarded as impossible until Chinook's team accomplished tho task. Chinook has also won some of tho famous dog team races in North America He is also something of a patriarch. Sixteen of his sons will accompany him to the Antarctic and they are expected to develop there as team lenders.
