The famous Romanesque Cathedral at Tournai caught fire yesterday. It contains pictures by Rubens and Jordaens. The fire was apparently due to the carelessness of workmen who were restoring the roof, which blazed fiercely. The cathedral has been saved, but (he damage is enormous, and it is feared that the stone vaulting may collapse into the nave. Tho church has often been considered the finest architectural treasure in Belgium. owing to the five graceful towers, which it was feared would collapse. It is now hoped that this danger has passed. A rainstorm helped the firemen to extinguish the fire. Soldiers assisted the clergy to remove the treasures from the building.
