HEAT AND HIGH GALE.

CONDITIONS IN SYDNEY. DAMAGE THROUGHOUT STATE. (Received October 8, 5.58 p.m.) SYDNEY. Oct. 8. Tho fiorco, hob gale which raged for seven hours yesterday reached a maximum velocity of 68 miles an hour. The temperature in Sydney was 98 degrees. The damage caused by the gale in Sydney and its environs is estimated at not less than £1,000,000. Reports of destruction on a, lesser scalo are coming to hand from all centres between Newcastle and Gabo. Bush fires have occurred at many places and a number of dwellings wero destroyed by firo or by tho gale. Garages and sheds wero levelled in all directions. In tho southern districts floods arc reported to bo imminent, as tho rivers arc rising. Settlers on tho river flats at Albury have been warned and stock is being removed to higher ground. The Goulburn River was 15ft. above tho normal level this morning at Seymour. It is expected that a portion of that town will bo submerged to-night. Thousands of rabbi! s and many snakes were drowned. POULTRY FARMER HURT. PLAYTHING OF THE WIND. (Received October 9. 10.15 a.m.) SYDNEY. Oct. 8. A poultry farmer, Mr. Williams, had a startling experience at the height of tho storm at Rydalmore. He was endeavouring to secure tho iron roof of a honhouso when an abnormal gust of wind lifted him and the roof and carried them over another shed to finally crash against a tree. Mr. Williams was taken to hospital suffering from a broken arm and a dislocated shoulder.
