WELCOME AT WELLINGTON. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON. Monday. Tlie now director of town planning, Mr. J. W. Mawson, and Mrs. Mawson, who have arrived England, were welcomed to Wellington on Saturday evening by Mr. W. M. Page, chairman of the Institute of Architects, and Mrs. Page. Speeches of welcome wore made also by Hon. R. A. Wright, tho Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, and Mr. S. Hurst Scager. In his reply Mr. Mawson defined town planning as tho application of all the sciences and common sense to the administration of citios and villages, so that tho finest amenities and advantages consistent with financial limitations could be obtained. Ho praised tho efforts of his predecessor, Mr. Hammond, the draughtsman of the town planning legislation, Mr. J. M. Christie, and Mr. Hurst Seager. Mr. Mawson said the New Zealand legislation had been so drafted as to avoid some of the serious mistakes made in European legislation. His work had taken him all over Europe, America and Canada, and ho had picked up many impressions which needed to bo worked out. Ho hoped his work would bo of benefit to Now Zealand, and to other parts of tho Empire as well.
