RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS.
AUCKLAND NOMINEES. MR. BAILEY AND MR. MINNS. representative; footballer. The two Auckland nominees for the 1929 Rhodes Scholarship, chosen yesterday by the University College Professorial Board, aro Mr E. E. Bailey, LL.B., arid Mr. P. C. Minns. They will be recommended to the selection committee, which is to award the scholarships. The claims of four candidates were considered, the other two being Mr. A. H. McDonald and Mr. E. D. Robins, M.Sc. Mr. Bailey, who was also nominated last year, is 21 years of age. He was educated at Sacred Heart College, where ho won several distinctions, including a junior national scholarship and a senior national scholarship. Ho obtained a university national scholarship at the age of 16 and was a full-time university student during 1924. Ho thon became a law clerk in the employ of Messrs. Fitchett, Rees and Luxford, qualifying as a solicitor at the age of 19. He obtained his LL.B. degree last year and is at present studying for his LL.M. degree. Mr. Bailey was a member of the university football team to go to Fiji in 1926 and he also accompanied the representative university team which went to the islands this year. As well, ho is a, keen tennis player. Mr. Minns has a most successful record as a runner and a football player. Ho is 21 years of ago. He attended the Auckland Grammar School for five years, matriculating in 1923. In 1925 ho obtained a junior university scholarship s,nd has attended the Auckland Training College and the University College since then, lie is at present studying for the £nal section of his B.A. In 1927 Mr. Minns won the quartermile championship of the University College. Ho played in the university senior football team in 1927, being also an Auckland representative that year, Again this year he represented the college and was in tho Auckland representatives. Ho played for North Island against South Island and was in the New Zealand team in tho first test match against New South .Wales. Both nominees aro considered to have exceptional merit and their selection is a popular one. Tho last Auckland nominee to obtain a scholarship was Mr. J. Dunning, in 1925.
