THE SALVATION ARMY.
CONGRESS IN WELLINGTON. NEWTON BRANCH ANNIVERSARY. The annual congress of the Salvation Army in New Zealand will commence in Wellington next Thursday, continuing for a week until Wednesday, June 13. Commissioner James Hay, officer in charge in New Zealand, will preside at the. congress, while General Booth's representative, Commissioner H. Mapp, will bo the chief speaker. Commissioner Mapp is one of the international secretaries of the Salvation Army in London and is due to arrive in Auckland by the Aorangi on Monday morning. It is expected that between 400 and 500 officers will attend the congress, where the year's work will be reviewed and advice will be given oil the conduct of the next year's campaign. The Auckland contingent will leave for Wellington next Tuesday and Wednesday. On the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the foundation of the Newton branch of the Salvation Army to-morrow, Colonel Toomer will conduct services at the Citadel in Ponsonby Road. Colonel Toomer is the Auckland divisional officer of tho Salvation Army, but' he has been transferred to Wellington and this will bo the last occasion on which he will participate in a service at Newton. A tea, to which the public is invited, will be held on Monday night, Colonel Toomer presiding. The Newton branch now has a membership of 200, besides the congregation. Officers serving in all parts of the world have been trained in the branch.
