IRISH OPEN GOLF TITLE. FINE WIN BY E. R, WHITCOMBE. Australian Pres3 Association—United Service (Received June 1, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 31. The Irish open golf championship at Newcastle, County Down, was won by E. R. Whitcombe, with a score of 288 for the 72 holes. The other leading scores were: Compston, 292; Jolly, 296; Cotton, 299; Jack Smith, C. A. Whitcombe, Mitchell, 300. COUNTY CRICKETER'S FEAT. HALLOWS SCORES 1000 IN MAY. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received June 1, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 31. The Lancashire county cricketer Hallows to-day completed 1000 runs in May, a feat hitherto accomplished only by W. G. Grace and Hammond, both Gloucestershire County players. The late Dr. W. G. Grace between May 9 and May 30, 1895, scored 1016 runs in 10 innings, and had an average of 112.88. Hammond scored 1028 runs between May 7 and May 28 in 13 innings, and had an average of 97.63. W. G. Grace was nearly 47 years old when he performed this feat.

Lindrum's best breaks were 185, 183, 211, 225, 110, and Maconachy's, 128 and 238. PARIS HARD-COURT TENNIS. PATTERSON INJURES ELBOW. Australian Press Association —United Service (Received Juno 1, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS. May 31. In the hard-court tennis championships, in the men's singles Boussus defeated Patterson, 6—l, 5—7, 9—7. Patterson then retired. . He says he has a bad attack of "tennis elbow," and is afraid he will be unable to play in the English championships at Wimbledon. Lacoste defeated Crawford, 6—o, 6—l, 7—5; Cochet defeated Hunter, I—6, 6—3, 6—4, 6—3; Hawkes defeated Robson (Argentine), 6—2, 6—4—6, 6—l In tho women's singles Miss Eileen Bennett defeated Miss Anderson (United States), 15—3, 7—9, 7—5: Miss Akhurst defeated Miss Joan Fry, 6—l, 6—l.
