ROOT CROP COMPETITIONS.

AWARDS AT OTOROHANGA. ' \ [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] OTOROHANGA. Tuesday. The third annual root crop competitions organised by the Gtorohanga Agricultural and Pastoral Association concluded last week, and the report of the judge, Mr. J. W. Woodcock, instructor in agriculture to the Department of Agriculture at Taumarunui, has now been received. The awards are as follows: — Mangels.—J. J. Walker, variety, Long Red (1): Weight per acre, 77J, tons; total points, 314^; a fine crop, clean and true to type. J. J. Walker, variety, Prizewinner, 2; weight per acre, 74 tons; total points, 112£; one of the finest crops seen lor evenness, quality and good cultivation. H. A. Lurman, variety, Yellow Globe, 3; weight per acre, 69 tons; total points, this was also a good crop, and the system of transplanting between the rows might have resulted in a very high tonnage, had the season not been dry. Carrots.—J. H. Fortune, White Belgian, 3L; weight, 55 tons; total points, 60£. R. Harper, White Belgian, 2; weight, 32 tons; total points, 60. H. A. Lurman, White Belgian, 3; weight, olj tor.s; total, 59 points. Swedes.—E. L. Strawbridge, Superlative, 1; weight, 36j tons; total points, 55; this was a very fine crop over the whole extensive area. R. Harper, Superlative, 2; weight, 38 tons; total points, 53. H. A. Lurman, Superlative and Grandmaster, 3; weight, 35 tons; total points, 52. Chou Mollier.—R. Harper, 1; weight, 38 tons; total points, 561. J. H. Fortune, 2; weight, 31-£ tons; total points, 47£. Since the competitions have started the avorages of the first three crops have beenl926, 46.6 tons per acre; 1927, 66.6 tons per acre; 1928, 73.5 tons per acre. The results show that the chief aim of the competitions, increased production and improved quality, is being realised.
