DESERTERS FROM STEAMER. SEAMEN SENT TO PRISON. Two English seamen, Thomas Connor, aged 29, and Thomas Bowden, aged 28, admitted in the Police Court yesterday • deserting the British ship Prunus a fortnight ago. Sentence of 14 days' imprisonment was imposed on each accused by the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt. "I am guilty," said John Davis Mean, atred 23, a native of the Cook Islands, who was charged with stealing an overcoat valued at £4. In requesting a week's ' remand, Chief-Detective Hammond said: "Accused has been stealing from football grounds " Accused was remanded for sentence until next Tuesday. An American seaman, Louis Couturi, aged 21, described as being lazy and dulJ, admitted a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had no money. "He deserted his ship, which will soon come back to Auckland from southern ports before she leaves for America/' said ChiefDetective Hammond, In order that Couturi could be placed on board the steamer when it reached Auckland the magistrate convicted and ordered accused . to come up for sentence if called upon within six months. The Salvation Army authorities will care for Conturi in the meantime. Pleading guilty to charges of stealing an overcoat and a pair of spectacles, William Wilfred Rhodes, ,aged 49, bushman, was remanded to appear to-morrow for sentence
