THE SALVATION ARMY.

INSPECTION OF THE WORK. COMMISSIONER MAPP'S TOUR. To inspect the work of the Salvation Army in Australia and New Zealand, arid to conduct conferences in the main centres, Commissioner W. H. Mapp arrived from England by the Niagara yesterday. He will continue his trip to Sydney this morning, and the first congress will open in Melbourne on May 3. Afterwards, he will attend congresses in Sydney and Brisbane before attending the New Zealand congress, to be held in Wellington on June 5.

Commissioner Mapp is making his present trip as personal representative of General Bramwell Booth. As international secretary of the Army, ho makes many visits to British Dominions and the United States. In 1917 he visited Russia, and when diplomatic relations with Britain wore broken off he was given three weeks in which to leave the country. His trip to the border was ,not without its perils, and the commissioner lost a number of his possessions before he escaped. He met Trotzky, and the Saltation Army leader did not appear to bo impressed with the cha:ac.ter of the man who for a time held file dettiiiy of millions of people in his hands. Trotzky was bitter in his attitude tew aid the Church in any form, and toward anything British. The Salvation Army had actively interested itself in the problem of emigration, Commissioner Mapp said. It seemed that the most satisfying solution was the bringing in of boys as immigrants. They were willing to go on the land and were not likely to become as discouraged as men who had worked in the cities.

" In England we have had reports of the work of the Army in New Zealand," Commissioner Mapp said. "We feel we are doing good for many people, even in your prosperous country. There are some energetic men in charge of our work here, and I feel sure they are doing their best."
