FIRE ON STEAMER.
MAHIA AT LYTTELTON.
BUNKER COAL BURNING.
GANGS ATTACKING OUTBREAK.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] OHRISTCH'tJRCH, Tuesday. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's liner Mahia arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning from Port Chalmers with her bunker hatch amidships on fire. The outbreak was probably due to spontaneous combustion.
Gangs of men have been busily engaged since the vessel's arrival getting out the coal, which is being temporarily stored between decks in order to get at the seat of the fire. At present smoke is issuing from the ventilators. The iron plates of the hatch are very hot, and it is thought the fire had been burning for several days before the vessel reached Lyttelton. The men will probably be working overtime to-night until the seat of the fire is reached.
