TIMBER YARD FIRE.
OUTBREAK IN SYDNEY.
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE.
(Received March 8, 8.48 u,m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, March 8. A fire, which at first threatened to be one of the largest in the history of Sydney, was checked this morning by the prompt action of tho fire brigade. The outbreak occurred at Hudson's timber yards, one of the largest in Australia, situated at Glebe, oti the south-west side of the city. It was discovered at 4 a.m.
The log mill was well alight when brigades from all parts of the city arrived. The firemen recognised that there was no hope of saving the mill, so they concentrated on the task of saving the stacks of timber and preventing the spread of the flames. They were assisted in this by fire-floats from which an immense quantity of watci was pumped out of the harbour. / .
Two firemen were injured. A number of High School boys who were encamped in a rowing shed near tho mill had narrowescapes. Tho flames were licking the building they were in when they were removed.
After the original outbreak had been subdufed three other fires occurred, and the firemen had strenuous work in preventing the flames spreading. All the fires were eventually controlled, however. It is estimated that the damage will run into many thousands of pounds.
