CONFLICT IN MEXICO.
STATE AND THE CHTJKC3L WHOLESALE ARRESTS MADE. RISINGS OF INSURGENTS. By Telegraph—-Press Association—Copyright. (Beceived January 29, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. MEXICO CITY, Jan. 38. A renewed conflict between the State and the Church in Mexico is indicated by the activities of insurrectionists in several States, in which rigorous military precautions have been taken. Wholesale arrests of Roman Catholics have been made in the capital and in other cities. The prisoners have been charged with plotting against the State. Proposals that the President, General > Calles, and Archbishop Gnada La jar a should meet to seek a compromise have not yet been approved in either camp. It is said the hierarchy will hold out indefinitely. It is hoped the Government will come to terms, or be forced by public opinion. The Government insists upon acceptance of the laws, especially the registration of priest with the municipal authorities, which the Roman Catholics argue, would give the control of tho priesthood to the State.
