JFHE TAKAPUNA MEETING. ! EDEN HALL WINS CUP. SHORT RACE TO TEA TIME. - ' t ; : •■ ' Delightful weather favoured the opening of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting on. Saturday and there was a largo attendance. The course was in excellent order and some splendid racing vras witnessed. Only two favourites were successful, but most of the winners were veil backed and there were no big surprises. The arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. F. D. McVay, worked smoothly and everything passed off well. The Takapuna Cup attracted a field of ieight and provided an excellent contest, Eden Hall winning by a head from Transformer, with Mint Leaf right up third. There was also a close finish in the open sprint event, Tea Timo getting home by a narrow margin from Dave, who beat the favourite, High finance, by a neck. Two jockeys in L. Manson and T. Green nearly monopolised the programme, winning three races apiece. Manson was successful on Cynthia N, Winsome Boy and Box, while Green scored on Eden Haii, Mithra and Ti Tree. The three lasc-named horses were all trained by J. ST. Jamieson, so that it was also a successful day for the Papakura trainer, who invariably wins a race or two at Takapuna. The totalisator handled £48,394, compared with £53,21-3 on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £9819. It has to be remembered, however, that the meeting last year opened on Anniversary Day. The following were the results of the "various events:— TRIAL STAKES. Of £250: second £35. third £ls. BY ARCHER. / In a field of oigliteen Cynthia N' was a linn favourite for the Trial Stakes, with good support also for La Roma and Liaison. The i,nside horses. Liaison and Micrometer, moved first, and they were the leaders alohg she back from La Roma, Idun, Brilliant Light, Kyngzone and Cynthia N. Running across 'the top La Roma joined Liaison in front and Cynthia N moved up third in front •if Micrometer, Kyngzone, Idun and Brilliant Light. There was little between La Roma. Liaison and Cynthia N at the home turn, where Micrometer and Palmares were their closest attendants. In the run home Cynthia N drew out to win by a length from La Roma, who beat Liaison by threeparts of a length. Micrometer was fourth, followed by Palmares, Idun, Brilliant Light and Kyngzone. Cynthia N won very easily and should soon score again. Palmares, who was on the extreme outside at the barrier, was badly placed early and ran a fine race to finish fifth Kyngzone bolted before the race. Uralla Wins Well. Eight started in the Orewa High-weight Handicap, Bold Front being a slightly better favourite than Uralla, who had a slight call over Rod Comet. Ripon Abbey was quickly iin front to lead past the etand closely followed by Uralla, Red Comet, Beau Cavalier and Bold Front. Tho order was unchanged as they turned along the back, but Uralla assumed command near the five furlong post and was the pilot across the top from Red Comet, Ripon Abbey, Beau Cavalier and Bold Front. The positions were the same: at the turn and Uralla went on in the straight to score easily by a length and a-half from Bold Front, who finished strongly to beat Red Comet by a neck. Beau Cavalier was close up fourth, with Ripon Abbey and Acushla' next and the others badly beaten. There was a good pool on the Stewards' Handicap, High Finance being about a £4OO better favourite than Nancy Lee, with solid support also for Tea Time. The inside horses. High Finance and Nancy Lee, found their feet quickest and they were the leaders along the back from Tea Time, Appellant, Flying Juliet and Dave. As they raced across the top Tea Time ran up second and Appellant went back slightly. High Finance was etill in charge at the turn, closely followed by Tea Ticio, Flying Juliet, Nancy* Lee and Dave, with Aurumavis showing up on the outside. In a good finish Tea Timo won by half a length from Dave who beat High Finance by a neck. Flying Juliet was fourth, with Aurumavis and Nancy Lee next. Dave was rather unlucky. Eden Hall Scores. The Takapuna Cup was a splendid betting race, with Desert Glow, Transformer and Eden Hall all heavily backed. Alonsoa and Pcgaway were tjje early leaders, Alonsoa leading past the stand from Scat, Desert Glow, Pegaway, Wedding March, Transformer and Eden Hall. As they went along the back Transformer ran up to Alonsoa, and crossing the top they were out a couple of lengths from Pegaway, Scat and Desert Glow, who were abreast, with Eden Hall next and Mint Leaf moving up fast. The field bunched at the turn, Transformer being first into the straight, closely followed by Desert Glow, Pegaway, Eden Hall and Mint Leaf (outside). Eden Hall received a nice run througn at this stage and came on to win a good race by a head from Transformer, who Mint Leaf by half a length. Desert Glow was close up fourth, followed by Pegaway, Scat and Wedding March. More patiently handled, Transformer, who was slightly sore, would probably have won. Over the first couple of iuclonus he was very slow, but once he warmed up his rider bustled him to the front. Pegaway and Desert Glow were in the picture at the turn, but weakened at the end. Mint Leaf was last most of the way and, aa he was very wide out round the bend, hi 3 third was a good effort. For the Ferry Handicap Speechless was a good favourite, about £350 better backed -,haii Orchus, who had a good call over .Ripon Abbey. There was a delay at the start. Welcome Home getting rid of his rider and it was some .minutes before he was caught. Eventually a good start was effected. Welcome Homo going opt to lead along the back from Lady Robinson, Ripon Abbey, Dress Circle. Orchus and Winsome Boy. Ripon Abbey took charge crossing the- top. and was first into the straight, closely attended by Lady Robinson, Orcbus, Winsome Boy, Atapai and Abbey Day, with Speechless coming on the outside.' Once they straightened up Winsome Boy came through to win by two and a-half lengths from Speechless,' who beat Ripon Abbey by half a length.- Lady Robinson was fourth, succeeded by Abbey Day, Atapai, Air King and Luxurious. Winsome Boy won well. Speechless received a bad passage and under the circumstances went a fine race. Mithra Scores. The Begum was a good favourite for the Calliope Handicap, although there was heavy support foe Mauriaena and the Mithra-Winnington bracket. Justify began quickest, but was soon supplanted by Winuington and Tho Begum. Winnington and 'I he Begum were the leaders across the top f rom Mauriaena, Justify, Valquette and Prodice. ji'he Begum. Mauriaena and Winnington were racing abreast an they came into the straight, with Prodice and Mithra handy aad White Wings coming fast on the outside. Mithra finished very strongly and won by a length and a-half from The Begum, with White Wings a head away third. Mauriaena was fourth, followed by Prodice, Winnington and Justify. Mithra won handsomely and should soon repeat the performance. White Wings did not begin too well and had none the best of the running. She displayed a lot of speed. Cormax, who claimed a slb apprentice allowance, was a £350 better favourite than Takarunga for the Hauraki Hack Handicap, War Officer being third choice. From a fair start Takarunga led past the stand, fol lowed by Tho Lover, Quinsilia, Corinas and Baby Bun. Running along the back Coriuax dropped back slightly. Judge's Box and War Officer moving up fourth and fifth respectively. Takarunga was still in charge crossing the top, closely attended by War Officer, The Lover, Judge's Box, Schorr and Baby Bun. The field' bunched nearing the turn, War Officer, Judge's Box, Baby Bun, 'i'lie Lover and Takarunga all being prominent In a fine finish Judge's Box scored by a length from The Lover, with Baby Bun a neck away third. Schorr was fourth, and ; ;hen in order were War Officer, Corinax and Pekatahi. The favourite was not well aandled and will do better. Schorr was a trifla unlucky. For the Zealandia Handicap Ti Tree was a strong favourite, being over twice as well backed as the second choice, Branson, who was only a little more fancied than Pmrcess Ronnie. Macroom and Ti Tree were quickly in front from Yaqui, Quillfire, Bransson and Town 6uard. Ti Tree drew out i crossing the top and "vmed for homo clear of Branson and Macroom, with Town Guard and Quillfire next. Ti Tree made a «nihorse race of it at the finish, scoring easily by five lengths from Branson. Who beat the fast-finishing Siaosi bv two lengths. Town Guard was fourth, with Matinee, Quillfire and Hipo next.

TO DAY'S PROGRAMME. The Takapuna Jockey Club's ' Summer Meeting will be concluded to-day. The various events have filled well, and another good day's sport is promised. Tho following is the list of acceptances:— 12 Noon.—MOA" - HANDICAP.

REVrEW OF THE FIELDS. BY ARCHER. Eighteen figure on the card for the Moana Handicap. Cynthia, N. has a good rise in weight, but will be fancied if started. In her absence Palmares, Atapai and Air King may be fancied. Although she has a rise of 101b Urala is likely to be in demand for the Waiwera High-weight Handicap, as she won very easily on Saturday. Bold Front and Beau Cavalier may be beat uupported of the others. Some useful hacks figure on the card for the Devonport Handicap. Speechless, who was unlucky on Saturday, is likely to start' favourite. Ripon Abbey and Lady Robinson may also have good followings. There is not a big field in the Suburban Handicap, and the High Finance-Prince Otto bracket is likely to appeal to backers. Dave, who was a little unlucky on Saturday, and Flying Juliet may also be in demand. A useful field will contest the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap. Transformer and Deseft Glow ran fine races in the Takapuna Cup and they may share favouritism. There are only six acceptors in the Hobson Handicap, yet it looks like being an interesting race. Backers will probably follow form and go for Mithra, White Wings and Prodice. If reserved for the Rangitoto Hack Handicap Cynthia N. will probably start favourite. In her absence The Lover, Schorr and War Officer may be the prime fancies. The elect of J. T. Jamieson's pair. Ti- ■ Tree and The Immigrant, will bo in strong favour -r/ith backers for the Anniversary Handicap. As Ti-Treo has a good rise in weight The Immigrant may be the pick. Outside of thiß pair Branson and SiaOsi may have most supporters. CANTERBURY GOSSIP. MORE WORK AT RICCARTON. PREPARATIONS FOR DUNEDIN". i [by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] CHRISTCHURCH; Saturday. Next week should see a livening up La the \vork on the Riccarton tracks, which have boon very quiet lately with so many horses absent at Trentham. The near approach of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, with the Canterbury Jockey Club's summer fixture to follow it. will give some interest to the track doings. Footfall did only light exercise during G. Murray-Aynsley's absence in Wellington. He was given a. useful gallop over five furlongs to-day and pulled up well. There is no chance of him being at Wingatui, as he is backward. His trainer realises he must be at his best to have any prospocts in the Duredin Cup, so the idea of sending him South has been abandoned. Satrap is going along well in his work and he may pay his way if sent South for the Dunedin meeting. His stable mate, Money Order, will have hosts of admirers if ho is a startor in the Publicans' Handicap. F. D. Jones expects to have a team of five horses for the Dunedin meeting. Arikiwai and First Sight look well after their racing at Trentham, while Stormy ia quite sound, though he may be a trifle backward.. Limerick locks in good fettle, and the fifth member of the putty will be Zaragoza, who may require some racing before she is at her best. It is probable tht Sir George Clifford will have several horsea racing at the Dunedin meeting, bat so far nothing has been decided regarding his team. Silver Coot ia booked for a trip .to Wingatui. If he would race up to his beat track form he would soon be in the money, as he is very well at present. Thorndale looks in the best of health after his recent racing at Trentham. Having won. at », mile and a-quarter this season; he is to be tried out over a longer journey in the Dunedin Cup. and as he is at the top of his form he may run on a long way. Count Cavour is still causing his connections anxiety. He has made slow progress from the trouble he got into in his fall at the Auckland meeting, and he ia on the easy list yet. The two-year-old Goblin Market, looking well after his two races at Trentham, is being kept busy, and he may be sent to Wingatui for the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, a race in . which he will be hard to beat. liapier is a regular visitor to the tracks, but lie is being confined to easy pacing. It is probable he will have his next race in tho Trentham Gold Cup to bo run in March. Paperchase will have an easy time for a fow weeks She has had plenty of racing lately and she will not be seriously tested again before Easter. Silver Paper is a daily visitor to the Riccarton tracks, hut ho is being confined to' light exercise. Even if he resumes fast-work immediately ho must bo backward for early engagements. Tho Wingatui trainer, F. Shaw, who has been on a visit to Trentham, is taking horiie the two-year-old Radiant Knight, by Paladin from Rainbow Gold He was a gift from G. Murray-Axnsloy who purchased him as a yearling. Radiant Knight showed early promise, but he has been off tho scene for some time. Ho met with an accident which left some scars, but from present appearances he should train on to a useful winner for his new owner.
