The list of New Year honours includes the following:— BARONS. Mr. George Gibbs, Conservative member of the House of Commons for West Bristol and a Government Whip. Sir Frederick Lugard, a former Gover r nor of Hongkong and Nigeria and row the British member of the Permanent Mandates Commission. G.C.M.G. Hon. Philip Street, Chief Justice of New South Wales. Sir Edward Grigg, Governor of Kenya Colony. BARONET. Mr. James Gomer Berry, the newspaper proprietor. G. 0.8. * i General Sir Alexander Godley. K.C.V.O. Sir Edward Elgar, the musical composer. KNIGHT BACHELOR. Mr. John Longstaft, the well-known artist. Mr. Henry Scott, Attorney-General of Fiji. Mr. Edward German, the musical composer. Mr. G. A. Gibbs wa3 born in 1873 and educated at Eton and Oxford. He has represented Bristol West in the House of Commons isince 1906. Ho is Treasurer of His Majesty's Household. Sir Frederick Lugard was born in 1858. He was at Sandhurst, and served in the Afghan War, 1879, the Sudan, 1835, and in other African campaigns. He was High Commissioner for Northern Nigeria, 19001906- and Governor of Hongkong, 1907-12. and Governor-General of Nigeria, 1914-19. Since 1922 he has been a member of the Mandates Commission. Hon. Philip Whistler Street was born in 1E63. He was educated at Sydney and called to the Bar in 1886. He was appointed a Judge in 1907, and Chief Justice in 1925. Sir Edward Grigg was born in 1879. He was at Winchester and Oxford and joined the Times in 1903. He later was in the Guards, and v/as military secretary to the Prince of Wales in 1919, while he was in Australia and New Zealand. He was then private secretary to Mr. Lloyd George. In 1925 he was appointed Governor of Kenya. He married Miss Joan Poynder, only daughter of Lord Islington, a former Governor-General of New Zealand, in 1923. Mr. James Garner Berry is one of tho well-known brothers who are newspaper proprietors. He is deputy-chairman of Allied Newspapers, Limited General Sir Alexander Godley was born in 1867, He joined the Army in 1886 and saw service in Africa, and was at the siege of Mafekfng. He was G.O.C. the New Zealand Forces, 1910-14. and served through the war at Gallipoli and else- . where and later commanded on the Rhine. Sir Edward Elgar was born in 1857. He studied music and became well known for his setting of Cardinal Newman's poerp, " The Dream of Gerontius." He has composed much fine work, and is tho leading British composer. Mr. John Longstaff is president of the Society of Australian Artists. He studied at the"Melbourne Art School, and later at Paris. Ho exhibited in the Salon and the Royal Academy. Many of his pictures are' in the Melbourne anc! Sydney Galleries. Mr. Hc-nry Milne Scott was born in Levuka in 1876, and called to the Fiji Bar in 1899. He has been AttorneyGeneral of Fiji on several occasions. He took silk in 1912. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1908. Mr. Edward German has been a. most prolific composer, including orchestral suites, music to Shakespeare's plays, to operas, and other works, including the Coronation March for the coronation of King Gieorge in 1911, and many songs. AUSTRALIAN TITLES. STATE RECOMMENDATIONS. NEW SOUTH WALES NAMES. (Received January 2, 9.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, Jan. 2. The Federal Cabinet has restored to tho States the right to make then own recommendations to the Home authorities in regard to granting titles to tho residents of the States. The Premier, Sir. R. T. Bavin, submitted several names, which appoar in the list of New Year honours.
