THE ELLERSLIE MEETING.

THIRD DAY'S PROGRAMME.

GREAT NORTHERN DERBY*

The Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting will be advanced a further stage next Monday, and matters shape most promisingly for a gathering that may eclipse the Lest previous record associated with New Year festivities at JSllerslio. The gentle raina that have fallen have had si most beneficial effect all round, and, with the Bting out of the ground, the track conditions will be rendered fh - st-class.

The Great Northern Derby is the leading event on Monday's programme, and, with 13 horses still engaged in tho classic event, there is material for a contest in every way worthy of the occasion. llie 54tli Derby will be marked by a special feature, for the starting point of tho race will be from the newly-formed ground, which provides for a run of a furlong beforo tho horses reach the bead of t;;e straight, and from the latter point to the turn at the bottom of the straight there is a run of threo furlongs. Tho A.R.C. Handicap has 1-1 horses engaged, , and, with Count Cavour, Rapier, and Star Stranger regarded as probable contestants, the mile and a-half rico is invested with a fine dash of interest. The interesting feature in connection with tho Newmarket Handicap is that tho three placed horses in the Railway Handicap (Awarere, Nancy Lee and Money Order) have been paid up for, and that points to the trio again measuring strides over the six furlongs course. Aussie, who figures top weight, is stated to have been unlucky in tho race for the Railway Handicap, and it will come as no surprise should he reverse places with his companion, Awarere, in Monday'a race.

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. BY ARCHER. Eleven figure on the card for the Ellcrslie Handicap. The class is not good and it may be a difficult race for backers. Although she failed when heavily backed on tue second clay, Saucy Lass may again find solid support. Singleton and War Officer may also claim attention. A moderate field of juveniles will contout the Midsummer Handicap. Episode shaped creditably in a better class on the opening day and may star); favourite over Tuo Begura and Pari. The New Year Hurdles has drawn a useful fies.d. The elect of R. Eanuon's pair. Lord Star and Wedding March, is likely to start favourite. Archibald and Sir Roseberry may also 'be in demand. A field of I 1! is carded for tne Auckland Racing Club Handicap and the event bears a very open aspect. The top j weight division is strong, but some of those lower down will be very difficult to a.;spose of. Pegaway, Star Stranger, and Eden Hall are nicely placed and may. bo among the popular fancies. There should be at least six runners in the Great Northern Derby and that will be sufficient to ensure an interesting race. Agrion won the New Zealand Derby in pood style, and on. that account is likely to bo a good favourite. Laughing Prince and Martarraa Lavs raced well at the meeting and may be the next best supported. On the strength of lub good form in the Queen's Plate Goshawk will command a strong following in the County HandicapGolden Armour and Torquil shaped well cn the opeming day and are also likely to hi fancied. The Newmarket Handicap has drawn it nice field of sprinters. Money Order, who finished third in tho Railway Handicap, is sure to have a large following, while the Awarere-Aussie bracket and Silvermino may also be in demand. Tho Glasgow Handicap bears an open aspect and should be a good betting race. If reservod, Papercliase will command a strong: following. In l»© r absence the favourite may como from Ti ffreo or King Lu.
