AMATEUR BOXING.
TOURNEY AT TE AROHA. SOME EXCELLENT CONTESTS. [BY TELEGEAPII. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE AROHA, Tuesday. The Te Aroha Boxing Association staged an amateur tournament of nine bonis in the Theatre Royal lust evening, between competitors from Te Awnmutu, Fianktou, Tuhuna, Huntly, Morrinsvil'o and Te Aroha. All the bouts went the scheduled distance and were watched with interest by a fairly large number of spectators. The standard of boxing hardly reached the standard set by previous tourneys. The star attractions were three six-round contests, at! of which were keenly fought, particularly the contests between Wilson and Bennett and Nobili and Wright. The best individual performance was that of J:l. Davies (Huntly) who showed skill and spirit to secure a win over a heavier and taller opponent, Mr. 11. Meaie, of Auckland, was referee.' Details are; Bantam-weight.—J:L Davies (iluntly), Bst 2lb, v. C. Meehan (Te Aroha), fist Sib.— Alter a spirited contest Bavies gained a popular decision. X. Stewart (Te Aroha), 9st, v. Harford (Te Awainutu), bst 2lb. Harford was not troubled to gain a points decision. A. Craig (Te Awainutu), 9st, v. A. Ardley (Frankton), Bst lib. In the fourth and last round Craig sent his tiring opponent through 'the ropes, and the referee's decision in favour of the Te Awainutu lad was well received. Feather-weights.—J. Wilson (Frankton), 9st 71b, v. Bennett (Te Awamutu), 9st 111b. In the first round' a right upper-cut nearly put Wilson out, and Bennett was twice warned for holding. Bennett was awarded tho decision. He boxed cleverly and outpointed Wilson, who failed to make up the leeway lost in the early part of the contest. R. Whitteu (Kaihuna), 9st 131b, v. H. Prenter (Te Aroha), 9sl. Whitlen was the first to get going, but Prenter remained cool under a hot attack. In the last round Prenter got home with six successive left leads, but Whitjeii's punches carried more sting, and he was ultimately awarded the decision. L Wat kins (Te Aroha), 9st 81b, v. V. W. Craig (Te Awamutu), 9st 9lb. Watkins did most of the leading in the first two rounds, but lacked speed. Craig exhibited greater cleverness and gained 'the decision. C. Wright (Te Aroha), 9st 10lb. v. L. JJobili (Frankton), lOst. The sixth was hotly contested, the spectators applauding the clever ringcraft of Nobili and the straight hitting of Wright. The latter was awarded a points decision after an exciting contest. W. Pitcher (Tahunah list. v. J. JlcTierney (Te Aroha), lOst. After a hard ftontest McTierney got the decision. C.
