THE NEXT ELECTION.

CLAIMS OF LABOUR PARTY. CIVIL SERVICE CANDIDATES. " BETTER TO STICK TO JOBS." [by tei.ec.raph.—special reporter.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. A claim that the Labour Parly will have nine members of the public service as candidates at the general election next year was made by the leader of the party, Mr. 11. E. Holland, iti the House to-day. Mr. Holland asked the Prime Minister if the Government would bring down legislation next session which would allow members of the public service to become candidates for Parliament without having to resign from the service, and thus forfeiting their superannuation benefits. 'T know that some of the public servants will be candidates next year," added Mr Holland. "I am sorry, but I do not appear to have been taken into the confidence of the service as much as you have," said the Prime Minister, Mr. Coates, smiling. Mr. Holland ; Oh, 1 am talking from a party point of view. They will be Labour candidates. The Prime Minister: I understand now I have not heard if there will be any standing for the Reform Party. A Voice: You don't expect that, do you ? Mr. Coates said he did not know how it could be made more convenient for members of the service to become candidates at the elections. "They would be much better advised to stick to their jobs than to take up politics," interjected Mr. W, S. Glenn (Rangitikei). The Prime Minister said he understood the position very well., but he would go into the matter before next session.
