THE YACHTING SEASON.

A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. NINE CLUBS TAKE PART.. HARBOUR AND CRUISING EVENtS. . - . ... -i '• The 1927-28 yachting season in Auckland was officially opened on Saturday afternoon under the auspices of the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association. As in fo'rmer years, the fixture took the form of combined cruising races for the larger yachts and launches to Islington Bay and harbour races for the Star, 18ft and under classes. A fresh south-west wind was blowing all the afternoon and 'many of the boats 'were reefed. All' hands were kept busy, especially when spinnakers were used, and there were many exciting incidents. Three boats capsized, two others broke their masts, while another carried away her rudder gudgeon and was driven on the eastern tide deflector. The crews were rescued without difficulty. All the local clubs took part in the opening and generally speaking the entries were very good, especially as there are still a large number of boats . out of commission. ! In the cruising race tiie Heel was divided into six classes, the boats of each club racing together in their respective classes. All the events were started irom the tower on King's Wharf. The big keel yachts raced round Kangitoto and Hotutapu, the smaller keelers and mullet boats proceeding to Islington Bay, via Duder's spit buoy in Kangitoto Channel. The course for launches was direct to the bay, while all the smaller boats raced over a harbour course. The first race—classes A and B— was started at 2.30 p.m., the other classes being sent away at intervals of eight minutes. By entering in three or more clubs, a number of the boats won several prizes. The most successful boat was the Mawhiti, which carried off six first prizes. In the mullet boat classes Celox won four first and two second prizes. The big keeler lorangi accounted for three firsts. The officials in charge of the racing were: —Starter. Mr. H. R. Arthur; assistantstarter, Mr. G. Mobberley ;• judge, harbour races, Mr. W. A. Wilkinson; timekeepers, Messrs. Arthur. A. J. Collings and G. E. Laycock; judge, cruising races, Mr. K. J. Kelly;' timekeeper, Mr. W. D. Ross. Details of the racing a,re ns follows;—■ THE KEEL YACHTS. The big keelers were sent away to. a straggling start, Nga-Xoa crossing the line first, followed by Kotiri, Waione, lorangi and Ranji in that order. Victory and Thelnia were almost 2m • late. Lady Wilma was 3m 6a late and Little Jim 13m. NgaToa continued her lead in the run down the harbour and, while gybing near North Head, one of her crew, J. Inkster, was knocked overboard. The yacht was quickly rounded up and Mr. Inkster rescued. NgaToa continued in the race and later on split her mainsail. Off North Head Thelma broke her gaff. She carried on to Cheltenham and dropped anchor. Rangi split her mainsail very badly at North Head and also retired. lorangi went into the lead, followed by Victory and Waione. The latter v .however, collided with the "flattie" Delphine and before Waitere 11. could clear herself she lost a good deal of time. Awatere started to gq to the assistance of the Delphine and also got a bad start. Running down the harbour, Spray broke her mast just above the cross-trees. Off King Edward Parade Celox was leadins Mona, with Eema, Starlight, Awatere, Why Not and Waitere 11. racing in that order. Mawhiti j was gaining on Manene all the while and when they rounded the sandspit beacon enly a length separat..' them.
