MAYFAIR "DENS."
GAMBLERS' GREAT RISKS. Disclosures in the London Bankruptcy Court concerning the losses o! £1940 incurred in one night by an earl have shed new light on the gambling dens of Mayfair. There are at least 250 houses where the stranger may "take a change," and it is nothing nnusual for amounts of between £IOOO and £3OOO to be risked in one evening's play. These modern clubs " are run quietly and unobtrusively. Their very existence is kept secret except to the privileged few. A slight nod of the head and a meaning, " See you to-night " is the code whereby " members " arrange to meet. The place is understood; no names are ever mentioned.
