THEFT CHARGE DENIED.
EX-INSURANCE MANAGER. SUM OF OVER £650 INVOLVED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHHISTCHURCH, Thursday. The hearing was continued in the Magistrate's Court to-day. of a charge against William Roy McDonald of the thefts of sums "'totalling £654 17s from the Guardian Assurance Company. Accused "was ex-manager of the Christchurch branch of the company. Wilfred Stuart Godfrey, of the firm of Godfrey and Franklin, accountants, said he had carried on an investigation of the books of the Guardian Assurance Company, the investigation having been started by his late partner, Mr. Franklin. Witness had found additional shortages amounting to £265 15s. He had compiled a list of deficit. An entry of £5 5s on the list was drawn for a club subscription, but was not paid to the club. Six cheques, produced, paid by the Timaru agent for the company to the office had been credited to the agent at an amount less tha,n that represented by each cheque. The deficit on the six cheques amounted to £250.
Mr. A. T. Bell, who appeared for accused, pleaded not guilty. Accused was committed' to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being renewed.
