GREAT FOREST FIRES.

DESTRUCTION IN FRANCE. HOMES AND CATTLE BURNED. A. and N.Z -Sun. PARIS, Aug. 18. Fires have destroyed 20,000 acres of forest in the Alpes Maritimes and the Var department. The outbreaks followed upon a prolonged drought. Farmhouses were burned and herds of cattle were roasted alive. The dislocation of the telegraph and telephone services makes it impossible to estimate the losses of lives and property. It is, however, thought that the latter damage, since Monday, amounts to 10.000,000 francs.
