TRANSPORT CONTROL.

INDEPENDENT BOARDS IDEA. PROBLEM BEING INVESTIGATED. REMOVAL OF ANOMALIES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Friday "The Government has under consideration a number of anomalies that have been revealed in the present system of controlling transport, and very careful inquiries are being made as to the effect of the legislation which was passed last year," said the Prime Minister, Mr. Coates, in the House to-day, when replying to a question by Mr. V. H. Potter (Roskill), whether, in view of the unsatisfactory conditions of transport in the Dominion, the Government would consider the setting up of transport boards. The Prime Minister mentioned that in some countries public utility boards controlled transportation, gas, electric light arid power and water. The Government did not suggest New Zealand should go as far as that, but the time was fast approaching when some organisation would be necessary in order that transportation matters might be controlled by completely independent boards. Mr. Coates said be and the Minister of Public Works and that department were endeavouring to work out a scheme under which the difficulties which had arisen would be more adequately and disinterestedly reviewed and dealt with. That was all he could say at the moment, except that there were difficulties. The Government recognised them and it hoped to overcome them. Mr. A. Harris (Waitemata): Is it proposed to take the licensing of transportation out of the hands of the owners of tramways ? The Prime Minister: That matter will be covered in the review that is being made.
