ONLY CENTURY BY TYLDESLEY.

BLUNT GETS FOUR FOR 53. By Telegraph—Pres3 Association —Copyright. (Received August IS, 6.39 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON, Aug. 17. The New Zealand cricklters this morning commenced a match against, the champion English county, Lancashire, at Manchester. In consequence of their fine victory at Derby a large attendance welcomed tho visitors when they turned out. McGirr replaced Oliver in the New Zealand team. The county won the toss and batted first on an easy pj^jhWhen Hallows had made 10 runs he slipped and strained one of his thighs so severely that he was compelled to retire. With E. Tyldesley and Watson together, 50 appeared on the board in 55 minutes. These two went on to 74 beloie Lowry broke the partnership after sevei.il changes had been tried in the bowling. The Lancashire batting then became very slow and but for Tyldesley it would have broken down altogether. It took tho side two hours to bring the century up. Thanks to a warm sun the pitch began to respond to the tactics of the spinbowlers. Blunt got Taylor leg before. After that, with the exception of Tyldesley, the batting failed badly. The last four wickets fell for 25 runs and the innings closed after four hours for 229. Ernest Tyldesley had played delightful cricket. He was in 190 minutes and hit eight fours and six threes. The New Zealanders began badly, Dacre falling to a catch off Macdonald by Farrimond for a " duck " when only three runs had been scored. After that Dempster and Blunt settled down to a fine, dogged effort. They were still unseparated when stumps were drawn. _ Details of the scores are:— LANCASHIRE.—First Innings.
