THE SHINGLE VOGUE.

Short hair has now made history. Much to everyone's surprise—including the haii-dressers —it has not been the craze of a mere season. It has become a habit rather than a fashion, or an epoch, for it plays its part in this age of short skirts, hard work and hard play. But it has changed in one respect only. A few years ago, it was every woman's' aim to have hers look as much like everyone else's as possible. She was content to look like all the others, and if she didn't, she feared something was wrong. To day the smart woman's aim is to get as much individuality into her haircut as possible. If it looks like everyone else's she knows something is wrong. Every head has a character of its own. It is the object of the hairdresser to emphasise that character, to bring out and develop its best points, to flatter the owner as does the line of a well-built dress, the curve of the perfect hat. Because of the new beauty ,it has brought to women—and have not artists of all ages admired the line of the unadorned head!—-the shingle is deeply rooted in feminine favour. It is very much on the increase, for even the fearful few who have remained so long on the waiting list are flocking to the hair-, dresser's. It will not go out of fashion until the slender figure gives way to the plump. And that, you say, will be never. Perhaps you are right, but the fact remains that "short hair is as essential to the silhouette as the silhouette is to modern chic. It is peculiarly applicable to this age of sport. There are definite fashions in hair as in dress, and we have gone through many stages. At the moment the smartest shingle is longer and more curly than it was last season. Although simple lines are still observed and the shape of the head always closely studied, a much more feminine aspect is now in vogue. One of the most charming of coiffures originated is the swirl where the hair is brushed smoothinglv- across the head at the back, giving it a childish, rounded look. A few soft curls are now added at the back. But it still follows the contour of the head, emphasising its. indi. viduality. Partings are smart and are worn usually on the slant. This effect is younger and more charaoteristic.
