CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. PROBLEM OF NATIVE RATES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —-OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] TAURANGA, Wednesday. The Tauranga Chamber of Commerce met last evening, Mr. R. Rutter presiding. The Minister of Public Works, Hon. K. S. Williams, in acknowledging a resolution urging the Government to put in hand the construction of the PaeroaPokeno railway, wrote regretting that on account of the already very heavy com mitments in connection with railway construction, it would not be possible to include on the railway estimates for this financial year any provision for the work. It was decided to support the representations of the WTiakatane Chamber in regard to weevil pest in imported maize, urging that regulations be issued to compel fumigation at the home port. The following resolutions were carried: —That the Defence Department be asked t6 erect a drill hall in Tauranga. That the Borough Council's attention be drawn to the nuisance, created by noisy motorbicycles. That the Minister of Defence be asked to arrange for the holding of annual territorial camps in Tauranga at intervals. That representations be made to have opossums introduced into the district. That the Minister of Internal Affairs be asked to consider the ability of opening an information bureau. It was decided that a communication be forwarded to the Minister expressing approval of the boundaries of the Tauranga Electorate as now defined. A* number of remits were framed foi consideration at the next meeting of the of Plenty Development League. At the last meeting of the Tauranga County Council a communication was received from Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, Mayor of Te Kuitiv dealing with the heavy financial losses suffered by local bodies through the non-payment of rates on native lands. The council was invited to send a delegate to a conference of interested local bodies, to be held at Te Kuiti on August 25 The chairman, Mr. R. an " the county clerk, Mr. A. H. P. Bnasco, were deputed to attend the conference.
