NATIVES AND LIQUOR.

PROSECUTION OF INDIAN.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PTJKEKOHE. Wednesday.

The story of a five-gallon keg of beer which has figured in a series of cases brought before the Pukekohe Police Court was again mentioned iri the Court to-day, when an Indian, John Penny, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting William McLean in supplying liquor to natives.

In entering the plea, iir. lister explained that apparently Penny, who was ignorant of the law, had committed a technical offence. Penny had handed the money for the keg of beer to two native companions, Ted Oki Oki and Thomas Tuhi, who had handed it to McLean. The last-named purchased the liquor at the Patumahoe Hotel. Penny's action in handing the money to the natives apparently made him guilty of an offence, but Penny still maintained that he arid fellow Indians consumed the liquor, none being supplied to the natives. The magistrate said that although it might be argued that Penny's offence was merely technical, it was a grave offence to illegally supply liquor to natives. Penny was fined £1 and costs.
