ROAD MAINTENANCE

Sir, —The railways belong to the people arid if freight and passenger transport is lost by motor transport it is fair and to the welfare of New Zealand that where railway transport is available road transport should he stopped and thus save the damage to roads and -upkeep cost. The road-motor is a blessing where no railways are made, but the upkeep of roads 'carrying heavy motor traffic costs more than the maintenance of railway lines. The cost of haulage by motor is much greater than by railway. This motor road maintenance is a hurdle that will have to be solved very soon. Our county system cannot possibly continue solvent and repair roads. County rates and other taxes combined are driving farmers from the land to run cars and trucks. Our taxation is excessive now and every possible saving helps to pay the war costs. Before the motor-car came commercial travellers used the railways. Now cars are used by these travellers, who at present pay comparatively little for using the roads. G. H. Mackenzie.
