NORTH SHORE WATER SUPPLY.
Sir,™-In the. discussion centring around the question of a .source of water supply for the North Shore boroughs, it seems to me that, one alternative has been overlooked. 1 refer to the possibility of utilising the upper part of tho harbour as a reservoir for the storage of the water brought down by the many creeks which empty into its upper reaches. If a barrage were constructed at Hobsonville, where the harbour is only a few hundred yards wide, the enclosed body of salt water would ultimately be replaced by fresh water. This would be of such a volume that to a certain extent it would be self-purifying, thus nullifying any pollution from adjacent settlement. A lock would provide for the requirements of shipping, which, incidentally, would be independent of the state of the tides A secondary advantage would be in .the utilisation of the top of the barrage as a roadway to connect the two sides of tho harbour F.W.C.
