THE PROVINCIAL TITLES. 1

SLATTERY'S FINE EXHIBITION.

Tbo annual provincial amateur boxing championships were held in the Town Hall .last evening, under the auspices of the Northern Boxing Association. There was a large attendance and some very fine matches were witnessed. In winning the. light-weight tiffle T. Slatterv, of Te Kuiti, gave a fine exhibition. In his first match, against C. McKnight, of Hamilton, he displayed clever riftg-craft, while his punching with the left and right hand was good. In the final against D. Armishaw, Slatterv showed himself to be v'ery fast, while his right hand punch, which shot straight from the shoulder, did a lot of damage. - The Craig Cup for the most scientific boxer was awarded to Frank Pearcey, a pupil of M. Hatton. The tournament was well controlled throughout. Following are the results:— FLY-WEIGHT. Semi-final.—C. Verrall (7st. 951b.). v. J. McLachlan (7st. 5Hb.): Verrall knocked McLachlan out early in the first round with a telling right cross.-Semi-final.—T. Shandley (7st. 9Jlb.), v. F. Pearcey (7st. 9Ub.): Pearcey hit cleanly with both hands and followed up well. Shandley was inclined to swing, while his defence was not sound. Pearcey received the decision. Final.—C. Verrall v. F. Pearcey.—Verrall showed more boxing ability than his opponent, who was inclined to swinff too much. However, Pearcey connected with a number of heavy blows, and was awarded the decision. BANTAM-WEIGHT. Final.—J. O'Sullivan <Bst. 21b.), v. C. Manson (Sst. lib.): A pair of clever twohanded boxers, the lads fought freely and gave a very fine exhibition. There was little difference at the end of the third round, O'Sullivan being awarded the decision. FEATHER-WEIGHT. Semi-final.—G. Leslie (Sst. 1011b.), v. F. Clarkson (Bst. 10lb.): The pair set to and made it a fight all .the way, Leslie was shaken in the second rouytd, but took the fight to his opponent gamely. Clarkson received the decision. Semi-final.—J. McPhail (Bst. 121b.), v. R. McLachlan (Sst. 91b.): McLachlan stood away from his opponent and continuously used an effective left. McPhail fought back with both hands and gained the decision. Final.—McPhail v. Agnew (Sst. lOJlb.): Clarkson retired from the final, Agnew taking his place. Agnew right-crossed McPhail at the end of the first round, and the towel was thrown in, Agnew securing the decision. LIGHT-WEIGHT. Semi-final.—J. Bishara (9st. lOJlb.). v. D. Armishaw (10st.): Bishara, , a twohanded boxer with a clever straight left, set out to make the pace, but Armishaw received the decision in a close contest. Semi-final.—C. McKnight (9st. lljlb.). v. T, Slattery (9st. 101b.): Slattery proved himself to be the best boy seen in the ring during the tournament. He secured the verdict in the third round. Final.—Slattery v. Armishaw. Slattery gave a fine exhibition of two-handed boxing. He continually reached out with his left and followed with a terriffic right, while his defence was remarkably sound. Armishaw was not accurate in punching, but his body work was good. Slattery secured the decision. WELTER-WEIGHT. Semi-final.—E. Armishaw (lOst. 71b.) v. L. Gee (lOst. 2ilb.): Armishaw, using a good left, took the fight to his opponent and connected often to the head and body. Gee took his punishment well but his defence was not sound. Armishaw got the decision. Semi-final.—Joe Smith (lOst. 41b.) v. R. Webster (lOst. 7ilb.): Smith out-punched and out-boxed his opponent until the second round, when Webster was awarded the bout on a foul. Final.—Armishaw v. Webster: In face of a succession of solid rights and lefts "Webster gained applause for his gameness. However, he was no match for Armishaw, who was awarded the decision in the second round. MIDDLE-WEIGHT. Semi-final. —J. Tieniey (lOst 131b.) v. J. Gardiner (list. 31b.): Gardiner fought cleanly and used a straight left to advantage. He dropped Tierney with a solid right-cross and the Taumarunui boy gamely rose at the count of eight. The referee then stopped the fight, awarding the decision to Gardiner. Semi-final.—P. Coombe (list. 31b.) v. Jas. Smith (lOst. 61b.): The difference in weights gave Coomhe a pull and he also had the advantage of height and reach. Smith boxed gamely but had little chance of scoring a clean hit. Coombe was awarded the bout. Final.—P. Coombe (list. 31b.) v. Gardiner (list 31b): After an uninteresting bout in which wrestling predominated, Coombe secured the decision. CRUISER-WEIGHT. Semi-final.—W. McLean (list. GJlb.) v. S. Burt (list, lllb.): McLean opened freely with snappy punches with both hands. Burt fought back with a telling left, but McLean right-crossed and his opponent took the count. Final.—A. Hosg (list. 91b.) v. W. McLean (list. 6}lb.): McLean injured his hand in the first round and retired. HEAVY-WEIGHT. Final.—D. Cowan (13st. 71b.) v. P. McCarthy (12st. 21b.): McCarthy out-boxed Cowan early in the first round _ and sent him to the floor for eight with a right cross. A few moments later the fight was stopped and the decision awarded to McCarthy. LECKIE DEFEATS CARROLL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Tuesday, A professional boxing contest between Johnny Leckie, Dunedin (Sst 13ilb), and Mark Carroll, Wanganui (9st 4£lb), took place to-night. The contest was scheduled for 15 rounds for a purse of £IOO, but in the eleventh round, m which Carroll was down three times, the referee stopped the contest and awarded the decision to Leckje. The latter had the better of the contest in practically every round, and outboxed his opponent.
