SOMERVILLE IN THE LEAD. UNIVERSITY'S EASY VICTORY. MOUNT EDEN HOLDS ST. LUKE'S. Somerville, the leading team in the Auckland Hockey Association's senior competition, maintained its position on Saturday by defeating .Areta in a game which was full of interest. Playing conditions were ideal, and there was a good attendance of hockey enthusiasts. The standard of play throughout all the games was high. The following tables show the positions of the teams in the senior competitions:

SOMERVILLE'S EASY WIN. Somerville set up an attack from the initial bully and a hot assault followed on the A rota goal. Stubborn defensive play by Davis and Archer eased the pressure, and a hard clearing hit by Smallwood further improved the position. A Quick sortie by the Areta front line was short-' lived, Colo stopping at the 25 and hitting to the opposing end. The Somerville forwards executed many brilliant movements, the players combining very effectively. A solid attack by the Somerville van caught tho defence out of position and C. Watts ran through and goaled. A sharp rally by tho Areta forwards was met by sound defence, and tho Somerville front line gained possession. After a good passing rush Seccombe goaled. Areta replied with a hot attack, from which Savage scored. Somerville raced away again and invaded the Areta circle, a hot flhot by H. Watts going just outside the goal. A midfield attack by Areta promised well, but J. Carter's shot went over the crossbar. Both forward lines hit the ball about very freely and play rapidly chanced ends. The half time score was:—Somerville, 2; Areta, 1- !* ... ,

Upon changing round Somerville'g van oxecuted some splendid attacks and Secombe quickly added a goal. After a sortie by Areta had been repulsed, the Somerville forwards broke away in another characteristic rush, which ended in H. Watts goaling from an acute Anthony, Hayson and Rykers were instrumental in placing Areta in a good position, but poor circle work spoiled the effort. Roberts relieved with a well-placed clearing hit and the Somerville forwards again raced through for E. Watts to goal from close range. The gamo ended:—Somerville, 5: Areta, 1. MOUNT EDEN'S CLOSE CALL. Mount Eden became dangerous when a strong concerted attack forced St. Luke's. Good defence by Steele and Williams kept the circle clear and the former sent play back to midfield. A bustling Mount Eden attack met, with success when Postles scored from a pass by Fletcher. St. Luke's assumed the aggressive and several torrid attacks were launched on the opposing goal, from one of %hich Steele evened the score with a fine shot. Both forward lines opened up .the play and the game quickly f hanged ends, neither side being able to gain oil advantage. The spell ended with the score one goal each. On resuming Mount Eden immediately pressed and the St. Luke's backs were seen in clever defensive play. Steele and A. Williams shifted the scene of operations and St. Luke's invaded tho Mount Eden circle. Hedges intercepted and sent his forwards away in a combined assault which ended in Cohen scoring. St. Luke's retaliated with a run down the wing by Mills and from the centre hit Hookham raced through and goaled. St. Luke's returned with another fast offensive which was countered brilliantly by Drought on the edge of the circle. Several dashes by Mount Eden proved fruitless, the defence being very sound. -St. Luke's then made a. combined central attack, which resulted in Bay goaling. In the closing stages of the game Mount Eden made a great rnlly and gained a corner hit, from which Fletcher scored with a brilliant shot. The final score was:— St. Luke's, 3; Mount Eden, 3.
