LABOUR IN AUSTRALIA.

ATTEMPT TO HEAL BREACH. CONFERENCE AGREED UPON. (Received June 9, 10.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SIDNEY, June 9. A split was threatened in the ranks of the followers of Mr. T. D. Mutch, the new leader of the' New South Wales Labour Party, over the proposals put forward by the Federal Executive of the Australian Labour Party in its attempt to bring the rival factions in New South Wales together. An influential, section of the Mutch party favoured holding a unity conference on July 9, but the other side was opposed to the conference.

A meeting of the anti-Lang caucus was held to consider the matter, and it was decided, for tho sake of the unity of the Labour movement, to accept tho proposals for a conference. This \move will isolate the Conroy Executive, The Central Branch of tho Australian Workers' Union, which has a membership of 20.000, has decided to withdraw from affiliation with tho Trades and Labour Council, oil the ground that the council has ceased to function in the interests of the industrialists. Mr. Mutch has received a letter from Mr. R Sernple, of tho New Zealand Labour Party, congratulating him on attaining the leadership. Mr. Semple says: " Lang and the arch- ' traitor Willis were willing tools of those who wanted to smash the Labour movement."
