SPORTSMEN OUT EARLY. TJhe weather for the opening of the shotting season yesterday was ideal, and it was reported a large number of sportsmen made an early start in the country districts. Many sportsmen who left Audkland during the week-end intended to zpake their headquarters near Mercer or Ifcangiriri. A lotal of 119 duck was secured among six £uns near Eangiriri yesterday morning. party included Mr. C. A. Whitney, of Auckland, and Mr. Frank Dyer, of Wellington. REPORT PROM EUMEU. Duck shooters report that game is plentiful, particularly on the Uhirangi Creek, .where a party of four guns took 13 bracse before 9 a.m. The total for the day was 27 brace. Pheasants are reported to bo very timid but plentiful in the back areas, and pukeko are apparently not so plentiful as last season, when they were protected. No very large have been reported, but the birds art; all in excellent condition. A party of sportsmen using a canvas boat for setting decoys had an involuntary dip in the icy water in Ohirangi Creek. Their boat struck a snag and sank under them, with the result that they lost- the greater part of their equipment. SPORT AT TE AROHA. SUCCESSFUL OPENING PAY.
