DAIRYING RESEARCH.

CONFERENCE DECISIONS. THE COMPOSITE COMMITTEE. " A MOST VALUABLE STEP." The highest hopes for success of the decisions made at the recent conference in Wellington for co-ordination of the existing agencies for dairying research are entertained by the Hon. Geo. Fowlds, president of the Auckland University College, who returned during the week-end. The conference consisted of representatives of the Dairy Produce Board, the Research Council, the Department of Agriculture, and the Agricultural College Council. " The object of the conference was to develop a plan for the supervision and carrying out of research in dairying which would give the best results, with the minimum of expense, and prevent unnecessary duplication and waste," Mr. Fowlds said. "It was recognised the Department of Agriculture would need to have a laboratory and soma staff for the routine testing and examination of samples arising in the daily work of the department, while it was agreed on the other hand that research work of a more fundamental character should be carried out by special research workers. " The problem the conference had to solve was, how best the work could be apportioned, retaining the closest possible contact with the teaching side of the college work. I think the agreement arrived at will work out to the satisfaction of all concerned, and will be likely to produce valuable results for the benefit of the dairying industry. " The details of the arrangement were set out in a statement published a fewdays ago. The feature of the agreement which I think most valuable will be the setting up of a composite committee representing all the parties of delegates at the conference. This committee will have the general supervision and direction of research in dairying and will keep all the parties fully interested and in closest touch with everything thnt is being done in that department. " The Agricultural College Council will now proceed as quickly as possible to finalise plans for erection of the necessary buildings and equipment of the dairying side of its work. The fact that all the laboratories will be located in the college buildings or adjacent to them will make possible the closest co-operation and j information to all engaged in the work."
