VICTORY FOR AUCKLAND. NEW ZEALAND TEAM BEATEN. CLOSE AND EXCITING GAME. In a fine open game, in which its inside backs combined in brilliant, passing movements, the Auckland representative team defeated tiie Auckland members of the New Zealand touring leam at Carlaw I'ark on Saturday by 24 points to 21. Auckland secured a last-minute victory, which delighted the large crowd, estimated at 14,000. The Auckland team rose to the occasion in fine style. Having an advantage in winning the ball from the scrums, the local backs kept New Zealand on the defensive throughout the game, but there was little to chopse between the teams. In the closing stages the excitement was intense, and interest was maintained until the final bell. Just before time, when a draw seemed inevitable, Auckland attacked desperately, and Tayno broke away with three forwards in support. Clark got possession and raced for the line, and as Davidson dived to tackle him he whipped a long, low pass back to Payne, who gathered the difficult transfer and, amid deafening cheers, dashed over to give Auckland a win by three points.
