DAMAGES IN DIVORCE.
AWARD OF HALF-A-CROWN. CASH VALUE OF LEEDS WIFE. LONDON, March 26. The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Hewart, sitting without a jury, was called upon to assess the dasmages to be awarded a petitioner in a divorce case at Leeds. The Judge said: ■' I award half-a-crown. That's the money value of this wife to her husband." Lord Hewart heard 11 out of 77 undefended petitions and then satirically remarked; "Cannot an ingenious member of the Bar devise a plan to hear petitions in batches of a dozen? It would save much time." He further suggested that the Chancellor of the Exchequer might raise revenue by selling decree nisi stamps at the post office. ' 4
