COLONEL SHOT DEAD.
OFFICER AT '• GIBRALTAR. :
ARREST OF A LIEUTENANT. VICTIM OF DELUSIONS. By Telesraph— Press Association—Copyright. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Ao-il 7. A sensational shooting affair is reported from Gibraltar. Colonel J. Fitzgerald, commanding the second battalion of the East Surreys at Gibraltar, paid his usual afternoon visit to the orderly room, accompanied by his adjutant. On leaving the latter noticed Lieutenant Duffield and asked him why he was there. Lieutenant Duffield said he wished to see the colonel. The adjutant obtained permission and Lieutenant Duffield entered. Presently shots were heard and it was found the colonel had been shot in the head. He said: "He shot me; arrest him." The colonel soon died. Lieutenant Duffield admitted his guilt. He was arrested and placed in a mental ward. It is understood Lieutenant Duffield was suffering from delusions. The officers say there was no ill-feeling between the men, and Colonel Fitzgerald recently complimented Lieutenant Duffield on his good work. The British colony has cancelled all entertainments.
